The Second Vatican Council restored the concept of faithhealing when it renamed “Extreme Unction” as “The Anointing of the Sick”. The Church has the power to heal and exercises that power through this Sacrament.

In addition to this Sacrament, the faithful believe that we are to pray to God for the healing of the sick. Every Sunday, during the Prayers of the Faithful, we always pray for the sick. God wants to heal us.

Anointing of the Sick is administered individually by appointment.
Communal services for administering this sacrament are usually offered once a year.

Who can receive this sacrament?

Baptized Christians who have any of these conditions:

  • seriously ill
  • chronically ill
  • advanced in years
  • addicted
