Patricia Rayburn, OSF was elected Provincial Minister. Those of you who were here in the 1970s will remember Sr. Pat as our first Director of Liturgy. First Assistant is Mary Litell, OSF; Provincial Councilors are Sheral Marshall, OSF and our own Janet Gwinn, OSF. We congratulate the sisters and their new leadership.

Thank You from Fr. Churck and Fr. Franklin
Many thanks to everyone who helped to plan and who participated in our Farewell Mass and reception last week. It was a wonderful event and both of us are still somewhat overwhelmed by the outpouring of friendship, affection, and love. Each of us received a beautiful wooden box containing all of the messages and notes you wrote. These will definitely be saved and savoured on rainy days! Know that we will be keeping each and all of you in our prayers as we begin our new ministries. How could we ever forget St. Francis?!

Thank You from Fr. Anthony: March 8
“Heart Beat,” our centennial dinner dance, was a great celebration of life and love–a “home run” as someone said. We had 250 guests, and I thank each and every one of you for coming, supporting, and participating with such joy. From the colorful, creative decorations, to the dinner and the dancing, to the entertainment (Joe’s band and the staff offerings were a hit) to the variety of auction items–and generous bids, the evening “rocked!” We netted $13,000 for our Step Ministry.

In particular I want to thank the Heart Beat steering committee whose vision, hard work and enthusiasm provided a spectacular evening for all of us to enjoy: Diana Bosley, Barbara & Ken Bucher, Richard Hernandez, Gus Kaplanis, Justin Lehr, Jackie Mikesell, Kay Skonieczny, Phil Trimboli, Janet Vitt and Clayton Whitehead.
Thank you!

Friar Rewiring Update: March 1
group photo of friars Preliminary to starting work on the rewiring, a complete floorplan of the friary has been drawn, all plugs and switches and current loads on the system have been identified.

The next step is to “ping” the system in order to determine the connection between plugs/switches and electrical boxes, as well as the electrical loads on each box.

The cost of this project will still be substantial, so thank you to all who have contributed so far. Your donations now total over $29,000! If you would like to make a contribution, please use one of the yellow envelopes available in your pew labeled “Friary Rewiring.”

Your parish and friar communities thank you for your generosity and concern!

Friar Rewiring Update: February 15
group photo of friars A St. Francis parishioner who is also an electrical engineer has volunteered his time and expertise, inspected the friary and determined that we do have 400 amps coming in, though from several sources. Before proceeding with repairs, we will have a complete engineering assessment made and an electrical “blueprint” of the friary drawn– which has never been done. This will give a complete picture of where we stand, as well as of what specifi cally needs repair, modifi cation or improvement of capacity.

The cost of this project will still be substantial, so thank you to all who have contributed so far. Your donations now total over $27,000! If you would like to make a contribution, please use one of the yellow envelopes available in your pew labeled “Friary Rewiring.” Your parish and friar communities thank you for your generosity and concern!

Friar News from Fr. Anthony: January 25
group photo of friars Friary Rewiring Update...
Thank you to all who have contributed so far to the friary rewiring project. Your donations now total over $20,000! The more donations we receive, the smaller the loan we will need and the less interest we will have to pay. If you would like to make a contribution, please use one of the yellow envelopes available in your pew labeled “Friary Rewiring.” We thank you for your generosity and concern!

We have reviewed bids, and the parish will proceed with the rewiring project as soon as we obtain a loan from the diocese.

Letter from Father Anthony: December 26
Fr. Anthony Garibaldi, OFM Friary Rewiring
Dear Parishioners, As some of you may have already heard, the friary has been having some electrical problems for the past two weeks. Some of our overhead lights went out on Sunday night, December 14th without breaking any of the existing circuits. We called in an electrician who upon investigation found some very serious electrical issues that could have resulted in an electrical fire. The friars spent that night outside the friary as a safety precaution. Tuesday the situation was stabilized and the friars returned to the friary.

The electrician found that the friary is wired for 60 amps. A standard 1300 sq. ft. home is wired for 200 amps. The friary ideally needs to be wired for 400 amps.

The friars were advised to unplug all unnecessary electrical outlets and drastically reduce the amperage on all circuits. The friars have moved our frozen food and unplugged the freezer and one refrigerator, unplugged all unnecessary sockets, and turn on our wall heaters sparingly. Ironically, the old wall heaters have their own circuits. Though stabilized the electrical situation remains critical. The reality is that the friary needs to be rewired.

To rewire the friary will cost a great deal of money, probably six figures. We are in the process of getting three bids on the project. The Diocesan Office and our Provincial Office are both aware of the situation. Both Offices are completely open to assist us in the project. What they both need to determine is how much they would be able to loan us to complete the project.

We want to thank all the parishioners who have inquired into the safety of the friars over these past two weeks. At present we seem to be managing and will be making some communal adjustments.

We are writing this letter primarily to inform you of our situation. At the same time, it has been suggested that we also make you aware of the situation, so that if you would like to contribute to this upcoming project, you will be able to do so before Dec. 31st. Such a donation would be tax deductible. If you would like to contribute to this project, please clearly designate it for the FRIARY REWIRING.

Again, thank you for your sincere and loving concern. May the Lord give all of you Peace.

Fr. Anthony M. Garibaldi, O.F.M. Pastor

From Father Anthony: November 9
Fr. Anthony Garibaldi, OFM Update on Electrical Work
The old wiring in the church has been removed and conduit and new wiring has been installed. The new lights above the front steps have been installed and are 25% more energy-effi cient. New sconces for the vestibule that will provide more light for the area have been ordered.

Our contractor, Curran Electric Co., has generously contributed 63 hours of additional labor to the project, along with providing materials and fi xtures at cost.

We will also be installing code-required exit/safety lights in the Church and Parish Center.

I would like to thank those of you who have thus far made special donations to the Building Fund to help cover the cost of these ongoing electrical repairs. We still have a ways to go!

Peace and blessings, Fr. Anthony

From Father Anthony: November 2
Fr. Anthony Garibaldi, OFM I reported last week on the electrical work needed in the church, and I would like to provide you with an update. This past week, old wiring in the choir loft area has been removed, and conduit and new wiring have been installed, Fan wiring has been repaired. New fi xtures have been installed over the front steps of the church to replace those (not original to the building) that had been damaged. Since we now have better circuitry and a perfect opportunity, new fi xtures have been ordered and will be installed in the vestibule area to provide more light. Old knob and tube wiring is being removed from the basement of the church. New wiring is being pulled. As I mentioned last weekend, this project will cost the parish $19,000. Please consider donating to our Building Fund to help pay for these repairs. Special envelopes are in the pews; all money donated to the Building Fund stays in the parish.

Work continues on the refurbishing of our church doors. Currently, door frames are being stripped and painted and should be fi nished next week, so please be careful while the paint is drying as you enter and exit the church.

Peace and blessings,
Fr. Anthony

From Father Anthony: October 26
Fr. Anthony Garibaldi, OFM Last weekend, I mentioned in the bulletin cover that repairs were needed to the electrical wiring in the church. I would like to give you more specifics about those repairs.

This summer, we began our investigation into the church wiring by identifying all the circuitry connected to the control box in the sacristy. We discovered that some circuits had been damaged or incorrectly wired, and that 2/3 of the dimmer board was damaged beyond repair. A new dimmer board was designed and built, and circuits were repaired/ re-wired. In early September, the new board was installed and programmed.

Next, we began investigating wiring to the lights in the choir loft area, vestibule, Reconciliation room, and chandeliers over the front steps of the church, which were intermittently losing power. Lacking a circuitry map, the electrician, as well as Joe Prassa and Sr. Peggy, searched under the church and discovered serious wiring issues: unsecured conduit, exposed wiring (outside of conduit or boxes), missing grounds, improper coupling of old (original) and new wiring, open junction boxes, exposed wire joints (not taped or covered with wire nuts); hot junction boxes and conduit.

Once these safety issues were discovered, all known circuits were turned off at the breaker boxes until repairs could begin.

The parish is fortunate in having the expertise of an electrician who has worked extensively in the Bay Area on many older churches and buildings, including the Presidio and Alcatraz. His familiarity with wiring safety issues, especially with joining old and new wiring correctly, is very helpful to us. Repairs are currently underway, with November 1 the target date for completion. This project will cost the parish $19,000. I encourage you to consider donating to our Building Fund to help pay for these repairs. Special envelopes are in the pews; all money donated to the Building Fund stays in the parish.

Celebrating A Century of Grace
The words Thank You inside a heart shape Our feast of St. Francis centennial weekend celebration overflowed with Spirit, gratitude, joy and love. As Fr. Anthony so aptly stated in his homily, it’s not our church building, as beautiful as it is, that makes our St. Francis parish the Spirit filled community it is. It is all of us, the people of God, those here now, those who have gone before us and those who will come after us who share our gifts and strive daily to live out our gospel call to welcome, to forgive and to love.

Many, many people helped make this glorious celebration happen. “Thank you” seems too small an expression of gratitude for the huge outpouring of generous donations of time, talents, food and dollars that came together to provide a “St. Francis moment” that will inspire and live long in memory.

Thank you to the centennial committee, the parish council, the choirs, the liturgy team, the liturgical dancers, the staff, the friars, the quilt team, the centennial book team, and all the volunteers who helped with the receptions, church cleaning, church services and the Blessing of the Animals.

We recognize and thank our generous donors for their support, especially: Hyatt Regency Sacramento, Embassy Suites, Sheraton Grand, Coca Cola Bottling Company and Pucci’s Pharmacy.

Thank you and God bless you!

From Father Anthony: September 28
Fr. Mel Jurisich, OFM The St. Barbara Province will be having their Provincial Chapter in January 2009. Fr. Mel Jurisich, O.F.M., has decided not to make his name available for election to another term as provincial. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Mel for all the support he has shown me personally as well as for all the support he has given to the parish.

Fr. Mel has had to handle some serious issues during his six years as provincial. He has spent over 18 years in provincial administration and has given of his time and talent out of love for the friars as well as for the people to whom the friars minister.

Please keep Fr. Mel and the friars in your prayers as we discern who will lead us into the future. Fr. Anthony

Greetings from Kazakhstan!
Dear Friends at St. Francis....

I know when missionaries or others come to your parish and ask for support you might sometimes wonder later how things have progressed or what happened.

I was at your parish in late August of 2007, preached at all the Masses and asked for help for the Franciscan Mission here in Kazakhstan. I told you about trying to build a new church. Now it is almost a year later, and I thought you might like to see a photo of the church construction. We are making progress and your contributions helped!

Thanks! Fr. David Gaa, OFM

Thank You: Annual Catholic Appeal

At St. Francis, our participation was 65% higher than 2008, totalling $45,984, of which we will receive 25% for our ministries that provide assistance to those most vulnerable in need.

Thank you for your participation and generosity. You can still participate in the Appeal:

Jubilee Year of St. Paul
June 29, 2008 - June 29, 2009
The Solemnity of Sts. Peter & Paul

Pope Benedict has called the Church throughout the world to observe a Jubilee year dedicated to the Apostle Paul. Catholics, Orthodox, and Christians of many other denominations will mark this special year—the second millennium of the apostle’s birth—by reflecting on his words, seeking his intercession, and following the ancient pilgrim way that leads to the great Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Wall which rises above the tomb of the apostle, just outside the ancient walls of Rome.

The Basilica will welcome tens of thousands of pilgrims during the coming year, and will also host a series of liturgies, ecumenical prayer services, concerts, lectures, and artistic and historical displays.

In announcing the Year of St. Paul, Pope Benedict urged all the faithful to come to know St. Paul better. For the next year we will dedicate this special place in our bulletin to learning more about St. Paul’s life and reflecting on his words as proclaimed in the second reading at our Sunday liturgies.

St Paul’s life and message, after his conversion, was Christ-centered. Through learning more about St Paul this year, we hope to learn more about Christ, and to witness ourselves to Christ’s love and truth in our daily lives.

St. Francis Retreat: Fire Damage Recovery
St. Francis Retreat House before and after fire On June 23, 2006, the Franciscan retreat house in San Juan Bautista suffered a fire: their stately victorian House burned to the ground, and the friars’ home and belongings, kitchen and dining rooms, upper conference room and all files and equipment were destroyed.

The friars are now living in the Casita; the Chapel serves as a conference room; and the offices are in a 30-year-old double-wide trailer. Despite this loss, St. Francis Retreat is open, with dining al fresco or in their “luxurious tent.”

The friars request the financial support of the community as they struggle to recover from this loss. Checks can be made out to Bring Back St. Francis and sent to:
