Our Adult Faith Formation Advisory Committee continues to provide creative and informative opportunities for the adults of our
parish to deepen and enrich their faith. Our parish provides meeting space and staff support to groups that serve a variety of
adult faith formation needs and experiences.
We have two trained spiritual directors and also provide space and support to individuals interning in nationally-recognized
Spiritual Direction Training Programs.

Franciscan scholar, teacher and speaker, whose books include "Clare of Assisi: A Biographical Study" and "Praying with
Clare of Assisi" (co-authored with Ramona Miller, OSF). She was the first woman to be awarded the Franciscan Medal
from the Franciscan Institute for her contribution to Franciscan Studies.

2009 Summer Film Festival DVDs
Theme: The Gospel Way of Active Non-violence
The four films screened at this year's Summer Film Festival are now available for checkout in the Parish Library.

Archbishop Oscar Romero stands between 1980s El Salvador's ruling military elite and a band of Marxist guerillas as a man with a simple demand: freedom and justice for all people. He braces for violence from both factions with quiet resolve and follows the way iof the non-violent Jesus. The film based on real events, was shot on location in Mexico. (English)
- Brothers
This poignant drama was chosen as winner of the Sundance Film Festival's World Cinema Dramatic Audience Prize. Michael has a successful military career, a beautiful wife and two daughters. His younger brother Jannik, in contrast, is a drifter, living on the edge of the law. When Michael is sent to Afghanistan on a UN mission, the balance between the two brothers changes forever. - Sophie Scholl: The Final Days
Arrested for participating in the White Rose resistance movement, anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl is subjected to a highly charged interrogation by the Gestapo, testing her loyalty to her cause, her family and her convictions. Based on true events, this absorbing Oscar-nominated drama explores maintaining human resolve in the face of intense pressure from a system determined to silence whistle-blosers. (Sub-titled)
- The Singing Revolution
This moving documentary recounts Estonia's fight for independence from Soviet occupation, telling the remarkable story of the hundreds of thousands of protestors who gathered in public to voice their dissent through song. After 50 years of rule by the oppressive Soviet regime, the people of Estonia gave life to a grassroots movement for change by staging passionate rallies and signing forbidden patriotic songs. The thrill of this documentary is in the remarkable story of the "Little Country That Could." Full of rousing folk music, the film is narrated by Linda Hunt. (English)

- The Beauty Academy of Kabul
The opening of a beauty school in Afghanistan is a gift to the women of a city slowly emerging from brutal Taliban repression. An American woman provides the Afghan women this opportunity to earn a living, and the film records their unpredictable and humorous journey towards mutual respect and understanding. (PG, English)
- El Norte
In search of the American Dream, a young brother and sister journey from a small village in Guatemala through Mexico to Los Angeles. While acknowledging the political realities of Latin America, El Norte is not a "political" film. It tells its story through the eyes of Rosa and Enrique, who are neither condescended to nor glorified. (PG, English)

- God Grew Tired of Us
Winner of a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the film focuses on the plight of the Lost Boys of Sudan-the tens of thousands of young men who were separated from their families, often mudered, during that nation's horrific civil war. In this affecting documentary, three Sudanese men struggle to adjust to life in the United States. As the men settle into their new lives, they deal with loneliness and feelings of guilt over the lost boys left behind. This beautiful and uplifting film illustrates the power of human beings to transcend profound suffering to a new life of compassion and joy. (PG, English)
- Earth
An emotionally devastating love story set within the sweeping social upheaval of India in 1947, when the country was divided into modern-day India and Pakistan. Told through the eyes of an eight-year-old girl. Religious conflicts between Hindus and Moselms simmer and threaten to tear the country apart. Friendships and loyalty are put to the test in this tale of love and ultimate betrayal.

- The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio
With ten children to feed, postwar Ohio housewife Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) has gotten used to being resourceful,
stretching her husband’s meager salary to the limit. But when clipping coupons won’t cut it, she’s forced to rely on
her creativity and enters a jingle-writing contest for extra income. Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern co-star in this
uncommon comedy-drama based on a heartwarming memoir by Ryan’s daughter, Terry. (PG-13)
- Born Into Brothels
This Oscar-winning documentary is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in Calcutta’s red-light district,
where their mothers work as prostitutes. Spurred by the kids’ fascination with her camera, Zana Briski, a photographer
documenting life in the brothels, decides to teach them photography. As they begin to look at and record their world
through new eyes, the kids awaken to their own talents and sense of worth. (R)
- Not One Less
Master Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou turns his lens on the travails of modern China’s peasants. Wei is a 13-year-old girl
pressed into serving as a substitute teacher in the school where she just graduated. To assist her in this task, she is
supplied with one piece of chalk for every day the teacher will be away. And she gets strict instructions: Since the
school’s subsidy depends on its head count, she is to return the full class to the teacher— ”not one less. But when a
student leaves for the city, she follows and strives relentlessly to bring him back. (G)
- Jesus Camp
This riveting Oscar-nominated documentary offers an unfiltered look at a revivalist subculture where devout Christian
youngsters are being primed to deliver the fundamentalist community’s religious and political messages. Building an
evangelical army of tomorrow, the Kids on Fire summer camp in Devil’s Lake, N.D., is dedicated to deepening the preteens’
spirituality and sowing the seeds of political activism as they’re exhorted to “take back America for Christ.” (PG-13)

Br. Bill Short, OFM is on the faculty of the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley. He is a scholar
equally comfortable in the fields of spirituality, Christian history and the Franciscan tradition, as well as a
popular leader of retreats and workshops.

- Black Robe
In 1634, Jesuit Missionary Fr. Laforgue arrives in the Canadian wilderness to convert the Hurons and Algonquins. On a
journey up the St. Lawrence River, a devastating chain of events causes Laforgue to question his beliefs and forever
changes the Huron and Algonquin way of life. (R)
- The Ninth Day
During World War II, Fr. Kremer is released from the Dachau concentration camp and sent home to Luxembourg. He soon
learns that he has nine days to convince the Bishop of Luxembourg to stop his show of resistance to the Nazi
occupiers. If he fails, he will be transported to a death camp in the East. Based on a true story. (NR)
- The Apostle
When charismatic but troubled Pentecostal Preacher Eulis “Sonny” Dewey (Robert Duvall) discovers his wife is having
an affair and planning to steal his church, he puts the other man in a coma and flees, staying one step ahead of the

- The Long Walk Home
Sissy Spacek stars as Miriam Thompson, a Montgomery, Alabama housewife who finds herself in the middle of a civil
rights revolution during the historic bus boycott of the 1950s. Her African-American maid, Odessa (Whoopi Goldberg)
is forced to walk the nine miles to the Thompson house and back. When Miriam learns this, she volunteers to give
Odessa a ride, to the dismay and ultimate outrage of her husband and social circle. (PG)
- The Passion of Joan of Arc
Widely considered one of the greatest movies of all time, this stunning, emotional drama recounts the events
surrounding Joan’s 1431 heresy trial, burning at the stake and subsequent martyrdom. Maria Valconetti gives a haunting
performance as the young French saint. The film’s original version (1928), thought to have been lost in a fire, was
miraculously found in perfect condition in 1981. (NR)

Looking for a Good Book? The St. Francis Library is open every Friday from Noon to 3PM and on
the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 8:30-11:30AM.
During these times, a library volunteer is available to help you with your reading
selection. The rest of the time, the Library is open on a self-service basis whenever the
Parish Center offices are open (M-F: 8AM-5PM).
The library is located in the Parish Center (across K Street from the Church).
